We made our way north to the city of Evora, and la Iglesia de San Francisco...with a chapel made of bones! Absolutely fascinating, and auspicious to be there around halloween. The church also had one of the largest collections of nativity scenes - made of everything from horse hairs to clay to crystal! #worldschool #portugal #worldasaclassroom

We bid farewell to the bigger group as they made their travels back home and we continued on to Sagres - once thought to be end of the world! It was fascinating for the children to learn about the fortress that stood on the edge and where so much world trading began - ideas, spices, foods, and more. #woodsoftheworld #worldschooling #naturebased

The last day together was so precious. We learned about different Portuguese instruments and learned a beautiful song along with them. We went to Tavira and visited the ancient cathedral. Our week ended with the children sharing all they learned together!

Today the children learned all about olives- Oliveira! We went to a local olive factory, which uses local sea salt-from the salt flats we learned about the day before! We had a tasting with olives, jams, oils and local cheeses. The children loved learning about food manufacturing- and were very curious about food and where it comes from- how it's made and what is better for you and cleaner...We also learned another lovely song - Oliveirinha de Serra!

Day 3- Today the children tended to the plants and introduced the fruits and vegetables they got the day before at the farmers market. After school, we all went to the Salt Flats and learned about salt production, the flora and fauna and the history of the Flats. We swam in the Mar Morto (dead sea) pool, and did a full body mask of black clay!

Today was such an exciting day for the children! After morning circle, we learned the names for fruits and trees, some native only to the Algarve. We learned about Alfarroba (carob). We planted an olive and rosemary tree and learned a song about rosemary that would continue to be a favorite of the trip (we found the song and it's playing on this post). Then we went to the local farmers market and each child found their list of fruits, communicating with store owners and doing math in euros. It was a beautiful day!

Portugal Immersion Day 1- the children loved learning a new language! We each shared our “brincadiera preferida” - our favorite activity and built upon the language with verbs and nouns by sharing what we love to play. Some of the children had been taking Portuguese lessons prior, so here they had a chance to really practice in a way that was fun and engaging. #woldschooling #portugal #woodsoftheworld

Woods of the World is a traveling educational program, which started as a cooperative homeschool in 2015. Our mission is to provide immersive educational experiences for children, connecting them with nature, sustainable relationships, and a myriad of cultures.

Our program is dedicated to creating meaningful connections between children and their environment through our temporary classrooms. We believe in the transformative power of experiential learning and cultural immersion, paving the way for a brighter, more connected future.
